Since 2014, VEGANUARY has inspired and supported more than one million people in 192 countries to go vegan for January - and beyond! With more and more discussions around this topic, have you thought about the cup of coffee that you wake up to, every morning?
IS YOUR COFFEE VEGAN?
It may seem like an easy question. Because we all know coffee is brewed from roasted coffee beans that are seeds of berries. There is no such thing as “vegan coffee” because well, all coffee is vegan. There’s no animal involved from start to finish—not even animal by-products.
So as long as you drink your coffee black or choose non-diary milk with your coffee, coffee is certainly vegan, right? But turns out that the answer to this question is more complicated than we think.
The vegan lifestyle is however about more than just avoiding animal products in your daily diet. It’s about choosing foods and products that are ethically sourced and created. It’s about living sustainably so our planet, animals, and humans can thrive together.
That begs the question…do you know where your coffee comes from? Do you know how the farmers producing your coffee are treated? Do you know if the natural habitats are protected? If you have been picking your beans or capsules off the shelves from a nearby grocery store without any information, then your answer is probably ‘no’.
Cheap coffee keeps coffee farmers from making their well-deserved profit. This means they do not have the financial security to improve their farms to be more sustainable or ethical.
Neither does expensive coffee guarantee that the farmers get their right share. Coffee beans are bought in bulk from farmers by big corporates at very low prices and then treated, packed and sold at a very high margin. That’s why the need of the hour is to support coffee charities that help farmers reach the right distributors. They not only make sure the farmers get a healthy profit but also educate farmers on how to reinvest these on growing better quality coffee in sustainable ways.
Coffee that is truly vegan-friendly in every sense supports ethical supply chains that empower farmers to support themselves and their families and their communities.
