MACHINE MAINTENANCE - How & Why Should You Descale Your Coffee Machine?

Ever felt like your coffee machine is spewing out warm coffee instead of the steaming hot cuppa you used to enjoy? Let’s face it…coffee is meant to be enjoyed strong and hot, and we don’t want to make any compromises there. The reason your machine is not providing you hot coffee is because its no longer able to. Let us explain you how and why this happens and how we can easily solve this.

First, let’s take a quick look at how water is heated inside your machine. Most modern coffee machines use thermo block technology systems which heat water through contact. These systems have small channels that allow water to pass through it. So how hot the water will get depends on the contact time and the surface area of contact between the water and the thermo block.

THE PROBLEM:
Over time a layer of limescale tends to build up around the thermo block and inside its channels. This build-up decreases the surface area and ultimately the contact the water will have with the thermo block. The build-up restricts the transfer of heat to the water which means you get colder coffee. Blocked thermo block channels can also eventually lead to machine failure. And we definitely don’t want that!

THE SOLUTION:
Lime scale and mineral deposits should be removed regularly by properly descaling your machine. Descaling with a proper solution thoroughly removes the build-up of those horrible deposits and keeps your machine running as it should, ensuring you continue to enjoy your coffee! Doing so will also prolong the life span of your coffee maker, avoiding the need to go and buy a new one.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT DESCALER
Even though vinegar would remove some scale, please leave it for your salad. It only does half the job, and the risk of your coffee tasting like vinegar afterwards is just too high. This is why you need a proper descaling solution, which has been developed for descaling. But be careful of what descaler you use! Most descalers contain less effective active ingredients or even toxic substances. Our premium Caffenu® Eco Descaler is biodegradable, environmentally friendly and phosphate-free. Our descaler uses a food-safe, high-grade lactic acid from Europe that restores the heating efficiency of your machine so you can enjoy the hot coffee you deserve. The Caffenu Eco Descaler removes limescale and mineral deposits from the pump, pipes, and boiler of your coffee machine and also contains a sanitizing action that helps to ensure the hygiene of your machine's internal components.

THE DESCALING PROCESS
The descaling solution works on the backend of your machine, removing lime scale and calcium build up from your pipes and boiler. Meaning that when you descale, those parts can actually do their job, and give you hot, great tasting coffee. And really, who would want to drink cold, bitter tasting coffee? Regular descaling makes sure that your coffee tastes great every single time, and also keeps your coffee machine in great condition.

Certain machines have a descaling light that will inform you when your coffee machine needs to be descaled, but don’t worry if your machine doesn’t. You need to descale every 3-5 months depending on the water hardness in your area.
